20 Most Rewatchable Horror Movies Of All Time

13. Jaws (1975)

The Shining Jack Nicholson
Universal Pictures

Jaws is a movie which improves on the source material. Within the novel, it’s a simple hunting story with a bunch of faceless characters. Any tension is removed because the crew went home every night rather than being out on sea for the entire mission. The film could have easily fallen in the trap of being another cringey monster attack film but Steven Spielberg greatly improves the story with some palpable suspense, a terrific villain and some added humanity to the main ensemble.

Spielberg knew how to utilise the fear of the unknown – we don’t see Bruce (the apparent name of the shark) for the first half of the film, we only know what it is capable of doing. The unknown makes it scarier because it forces the audiences to use the imagination of just how intimidating the aquatic monster is. And when Bruce is finally revealed, it’s one of the most terrifying moments of the film because it’s somehow scarier than any of us envisioned.

Jaws was enough to make people scared to go back in the water – THAT is the power of good movie-making. After countless re-watches, you still feel all the tensions and scares that you experienced on your first viewing.
