20 Most Rewatchable Movies Of The 21st Century

1. Inception (2010)

Warner Bros. Pictures

Christopher Nolan was providing food for thought long before he had the budget to match his intellectual ambition - Memento, for example, was made on a budget of just $5 million, but the final product still successfully rivalled any major Hollywood film for ideas. But given $160 million to play with on Inception, Nolan set about making one of the most ambitious, original and truly the smartest blockbuster of modern times.

A kind of action-packed cousin to Eternal Sunshine, but made with eight times the money, Inception plunges viewers into a malleable dream world that recognises the infinite possibilities of the human mind. Inception is a sci-fi movie that fulfils Nolan's fantasy of making a series of Bond movies in one, the master spy Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his team of 'extractors' jetting from Tokyo to Tangiers to Paris to the US, in between getting into all sorts of scrapes in the minds of their targets.

But whilst Inception features great performances, action, dialogue and visuals, as well as some iconic music, what makes it stand out from any other summer spectacle is how it makes you think. About death, love, our time on this earth, the nature of what we perceive as reality and, above all else, inspiration.

Inception is a film about creation, one that cherishes just how complex and imaginative we are as a species.

Lover of film, writer of words, pretentious beyond belief. Thinks Scorsese and Kubrick are the kings of cinema, but PT Anderson and David Fincher are the dashing young princes. Follow Brogan on twitter if you can take shameless self-promotion: @BroganMorris1
