Coming from British genre legend Joe Cornish, this grimy and surprisingly serious 2011 effort launched star John Boyega to super stardom after his stoic turn as its, er, morally grey protagonist, but it’s worth a re-watch for more than the future Star Wars actor’s presence.

Filled with effective action sequences and utilising some strange, fascinating monster designs, this flick combines Amblin-style “kids versus extra terrestrial invaders” comedic action adventure with the gory, uncompromising tone of an early John Carpenter effort like Assault on Precinct 13. Despite planting its tongue firmly in cheek, this flick has moments of genuine tension and tragic violence—enough to recommend revisiting it on the regular.
