arlington-road1The Plot: College professor Jeff Bridges comes to suspect that his new neighbors Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack are terrorists intent on causing murder and mayhem. He races to discover and stop their plans but things don't go well for the dude. The Twist: As Jeff Bridges drives to the FBI headquarters to raise the alarm he finds it's his van packed with explosives, not the one he was following. His van detonates inside the FBI car park destroying the building and killing hundreds, the bad guys get away with it and poor old Jeff is painted as a crazy loner out for revenge in this ridiculously good and sobering twist.

18. Perfect Stranger

perfectstrangerThe Plot: Halle Berry plays an investigative reporter looking into the murder of a young girl. Could the killer be Bruce Willis' married executive who has been having an affair with Ms Berry? Or possibly Giovanni Ribisi's creepy researcher? Or how about someone that would render the whole plot completely redundant with the all the class and subtlety of a bride on My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding... The Twist: After evidence is found indicating Bruce is the killer he is arrested and convicted and everyone goes back to there normal lives, case closed, film over...or so you think because then we're treated to five minutes of some the worst exposition in cinema history as we discover that Halle Berry was actually the killer...making the preceding 90 minutes the biggest waste of time since a total of seven people went to see Catwoman in the cinema.

17. Dead Man's Shoes

dead-mans-shoes-01The Plot: In Shane Meadows' excellent revenge thriller, Paddy Considine's former soldier Richard returns home and camps on the outskirts of a small town with his mentally disabled younger brother Anthony (Toby Kebbell) Through a series of flashbacks we see Anthony being abused by the local drug dealers while his older brother vows revenge. The Twist: The flashbacks show the escalating abuse which ends with Anthony hanging himself after being mentally tortured which reveals that Richard has been talking to a vision of his younger brother all along. This twist really validates the touching sense of depth hinted at in the relationship between the brothers throughout this great British film.
