Considering how the majority of the comedy movies aimed primarily at black audiences are depressingly low-effort, critically-panned offerings from the likes of Tyler Perry, it was perfectly reasonable to expect a mixed-negative response to the latest offering from Scary Movie 5 director Malcolm D. Lee.

As it turned out, Girls Trip served up consistent laughs even while treading familiar ground, bolstered by four highly entertaining central performances, especially the boisterous, over-the-top Tiffany Haddish.

Considering how many so-called "black movies" cynically talk down to their target audience - looking at you again, Tyler Perry - it's great to see a rambunctious comedy that's more invested in character-driven laughs.
