Once word broke that director Ridley Scott was going to perform last-minute reshoots in order to erase Kevin Spacey from his latest film and replace him with Christopher Plummer, any and all expectations for the movie suddenly went up in smoke.

Could even the veteran actor-director combo of Plummer and Scott save a troubled production at the last minute, or in a desperate attempt to rescue the film's box office prospects by deleting Spacey, would the end product be a total, disjointed mess?

Against considerable pressure, Scott turned in a thoroughly entertaining period thriller, benefiting from terrific work by both Plummer and Michelle Williams.

Had the movie tanked with critics it wouldn't have been remotely surprising, but given the bravery of Scott's decision and the wider political statement it made, critics were clearly eager to cut the film a break. Plus, it happened to be pretty damn solid, too.
