20 Most Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Scores Of 2017
14. The Circle
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 16%
An adaptation of Dave Eggers' 2013 dystopian novel directed by James Ponsoldt and co-starring Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega, Bill Paxton and more? On paper, this sounds great.
After all, Ponsoldt's four prior movies all received solid acclaim from critics, with his previous film The End of the Tour even scooping up awards buzz and a cool 91% on the Tomatometer.
The Circle, however, shows a director totally out of his depth, and lacks any of the hallmarks that made Ponsoldt's previous works so compelling. The performances fall mostly flat, save perhaps for Hanks, it's frequently unintentionally hilarious, and overall just feels like a majorly missed opportunity given the talent involved.
