20 Most Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Scores Of 2019
9. The Goldfinch (25%)
On paper, The Goldfinch seemed like a sure-thing critical darling and Oscar hopeful, what with its acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning source novel, all-star cast, and the presence of both Oscar-nominated screenwriter Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and director John Crowley, whose previous film Brooklyn received three Oscar nods and scored a storming 97% with critics.
But despite so much promise, The Goldfinch was 2019's most high-profile Oscar bait dud, ending up pummeled by critics for its self-indulgent 149-minute runtime, pretentious script, and weirdly flat direction.
In fact, the only aspect of the film to receive consistent praise was Roger Deakins' gorgeous cinematography, but otherwise 75% of critics totally rubbished it.
