20 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The 21st Century

10. Comet (2014)

High Life
IFC Films

Emmy Rossum and Justin Long have long been two of Hollywood's most overlooked stars, and in the equally underappreciated sci-fi romance Comet they found themselves cast in two of their strongest roles.

Kimberly (Rossum) and Dell (Long) are the only two characters in the film, as director and writer Sam Esmail charts their on-again-off-again relationship with a time bending and frequently confusing narrative.

Playing like a "Scenes from a Relationship" romance, Comet takes place with no real order, and tells the couple's story by way of time skips, parallel realities and a motor-mouthed script reminiscent of Aaron Sorkin's dialogue-happy stylings.

Though there are some bumps along the way, where the complexities of the story begins to overpower the film's emotional core, Comet is still a remarkably solid slice of romantic friction and daring sci-fi tropes, grounded by its perfectly balanced lead stars and philosophical musings.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
