20 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The 21st Century

17. Coherence (2013)

High Life
Metrodome Distribution

Perhaps if director James Ward Byrkit had been given a larger budget to craft his ingenious masterwork Coherence, more people would have seen it for the brilliant film it is. Then again, the loose plot and miniscule budget are what make the film pop so well, so maybe it's for the best it only cost fifty grand to put together.

Made without a script and improvised by its lesser known cast, Coherence tells the story of a group of friends at a dinner party who are shocked to discover an alternate reality in their neighbourhood after a comet passes overhead.

Surreal and endlessly twisting, the film moves between claustrophobic thriller to mysterious sci-fi caper without fault, crafted around a series of inspired performances and an intensely unpredictable tone.

Coherence is the kind of sci-fi flick designed to mess with your head, but between the top grade work of its ensemble and frequently macabre tone, it's more than worth the mental torment.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
