20 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The 21st Century

16. The Nines (2007)

High Life
Destination Films

Before he really blew up and began starring in what seems like every blockbuster on offer, Ryan Reynolds was cast in a trio of roles for John August's challenging and deeply philosophical sci-fi drama, The Nines.

Split into three episodic chapters, the drama tells the story of a down-and-out actor, a troubled writer and a game designer, as they each try to figure out where they stand in the world and what's going on with their lives.

An endlessly interesting character study held together by Reynolds' committed performance, The Nines tackles everything from faith, parallel universes and identity, and does so with a clever narrative structure and witty script.

It's not as overtly sci-fi centred as others on this list, but it still makes for a tantalising romp into a strange world, with enough intrigue and creativity to keep sci-fi fans and skeptics alike hooked until the final revelation.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
