20 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The 21st Century

15. Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

High Life
FilmDistrict

A film that starts off as just plain odd and silly, Safety Not Guaranteed quickly shows what it's made of, with a time travel-centric plot that allows the more obscene sequences of the film to be counteracted with surprising heart and a series of compelling and moving plot twists.

In it, the ever-delightful Audrey Plaza stars as journalist Darius, who is told by her boss (Jake Johnson) to investigate Kenneth (Mark Duplass), a store clerk who's plotting to go back in time and save his late girlfriend (Kristen Bell) from a tragic fate.

What follows is a frequently hilarious, genre-bending rom-com in which the odd assortment of key players come face to face with love, life and, of course, the possibility of time travel.

Also, between its well-written narrative structure and well reviewed characters, Safety Not Guaranteed is often credited with kicking off Netflix's frequent involvement with up-and-coming indie filmmakers, and that added to the excellence of the film itself should warrant it being dug back up for all to see.
