20 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The 21st Century

13. Monsters (2010)

High Life
Vertigo Films

When we think of great sci-fi films, we often find ourselves reminded of expensive, game-changing blockbusters, like Star Wars, Blade Runner, Aliens and the like. But as with Coherence, 2010's overlooked masterstroke Monsters ended up being a fantastic slice of sci-fi excellence with very little money behind it.

Set years after a NASA probe crash landed in Mexico and created an area inhabited by inexplicable tentacled aliens, the film follows photojournalist Andrew (Scoot McNairy) as he braves the infected area with his boss's daughter (Whitney Able) in tow.

Headed over to the States, the pair come face-to-face with the monsters residing within the US-Mexican border, uncovering secrets about the crashed probe and the aliens as they go.

Made for only half a million dollars, Monsters sports some truly remarkable special effects and an affecting, atmospheric character-centric plot courtesy of McNairy and Able's excellent performances.
