20 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The 21st Century

12. Another Earth (2011)

High Life
Fox Searchlight Pictures

Costing even less to make than Monsters, Another Earth sports a melancholic plot driven by a tragic chance encounter between astrology student Rhoda (Britt Marling) and music teacher John (William Mapother).

As Rhoda reels from her actions earlier in the film, a second Earth is spotted in the sky and Rhoda tries to atone her sins.

Another Earth is a simple but effective drama that uses its limited characters to tackle a series of big, philosophical questions about life, the universe and grief.

Both Marling and Mapother give searing performances as two people forever changed by the same accident, and between their sweet but complicated relationship and the profundity of the film's themes, Another Earth deserves to be seen as a future classic of the sci-fi genre - if only more people would get out and see it.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
