20 Most Unfairly Hated Movies Of The 21st Century

16. The Core (2003)

Watchmen Blue
Paramount Pictures

Why It's Hated: The Core is a popular movie to hate because of its absurd premise (scientists drilling into the Earth's core to restart its rotation), scientific inaccuracy and the misguided belief that it doesn't know exactly what it's doing.

Why It's Unfair: This is a ridiculously entertaining movie that wears its self-awareness on its sleeve, indulging in all the daft disaster movie tropes you'd both expect and hope for, while amusingly roping in an unexpectedly talented cast (Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, Bruce Greenwood and Richard Jenkins) in the bargain.

It is exactly what so much great cinema is: perfect escapism. No, The Core is not great cinema, but it's easy to get wrapped up in the marvelous silliness of it all, rather than smugly pontificate about errors in scientific logic that the filmmakers are absolutely aware of.
