20. Darth Maul's Cameo - Solo: A Star Wars Story
Fan service was to be expected in this Han Solo origin story, but did anyone actually expect to see the surprise return of Darth Maul (Ray Park) in the film's climax?
After Q'ira (Emilia Clarke) has eliminated Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany) and assumed his position in the Crimson Dawn organisation, she calls up her new boss, who just so happens to be a hooded Maul himself.
She gives Maul her version of events and he orders her to meet him on his home planet Dothamir, adding, "You and I will be working much more closely from now on."
For many casual Star Wars fans this was a bit confusing, considering that Maul was lanced in half by Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) at the end of The Phantom Menace. But if you're up on your wider lore, you'll know that Maul survived his apparent end, and even got some nifty new robot legs to boot.
Sadly, though, Solo's box office failure could mean that any plans for a larger Maul role in future Star Wars movies have been put on hold if not nixed entirely. But on its own merits, this was a genuine breath-taker of a cameo.
