20 Most WTF Movie Moments Of 2021 (So Far)
3. The Prone Restraint Scene - Music
Sia's musical drama Music is another movie that qualifies as a feature-length WTF moment, a well-intended if spectacularly ill-executed attempt to depict the experiences of a nonverbal autistic person.
Beyond the fact that the title character (Maddie Zegler) is a rather clumsy, stereotypical example of an autistic person, the film received intense criticism from autism advocacy groups for its depiction of the highly dangerous prone restraint technique.
In a scene where Music has a "meltdown," her sister Zu (Kate Hudson) restrains her on the ground, laying on top of her to stop her moving.
Given that such an attempt to calm an autistic person has resulted in suffocation deaths in the real world and is as such heavily frowned upon in the autistic community, many found it deeply troubling that it was included in this film at all.
The biggest concern was that neurotypical people might come away from the film believing that this was an acceptable way to restrain an autistic person, resulting in Sia eventually apologising for the scene and having it cut from future prints of the movie.
