10. Annette Is A Puppet - Annette
Leos Carax's new film Annette certainly isn't for everyone, but it is one of the most unique and tough-to-forget films of the year.
The movie is named after the young daughter of stand-up comedian Henry McHenry (Adam Driver) and world-famous soprano Ann Desfranoux (Marion Cotillard), but rather than cast a young actress to play Annette, for most of the movie she's played by... a marionette puppet.
As Annette grows over time we see various puppet iterations of the character, an effect that's at once unsettling and strangely sweet, while also serving the thematic purpose of emphasising how Henry exploits his daughter's angelic singing voice for his own benefit.
Only in the film's final scene does Annette appear as a human girl (Devyn McDowell), as proves quite brilliantly jarring after spending so long getting to know Annette in her puppet form.
