6. Polka Dot Man's Oedipal Complex - The Suicide Squad
James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is totally deranged in the best way possible, and perhaps never more than in its exploration of Polka Dot Man's (David Dastmalchian) crippling mommy issues.
Polka Dot Man reveals early that he and his siblings were experimented upon as children by their cruel mother, a S.T.A.R. Labs employee who wanted to turn them into metahumans.
He managed to survive but was stricken with his dubious polka dot "powers," requiring him to fire out polka dots twice per day or risk dying. Due to his traumatic upbringing, Polka Dot Man sees his mother frequently while living his daily life.
In the film this includes envisioning the Squad as his mother, as a group of women he dances with at a bar, and most dementedly, taking the guise of the giant Kaiju Starro at the end of the movie.
Seeing a huge mirage of his mother stomping around Corto Maltese is categorically insane, though at least Polka Dots gets to therapise himself by firing some dots and melting "her" leg.
That James Gunn convinced Warner Bros. to give him $185 million for this madness is just the best.
