20 Most WTF Movie Moments Of 2021
1. The Gabriel Twist - Malignant
And finally, we come to the single most unhinged, WTF moment of the year, and it can't be anything other than the third act reveal in James Wan's utterly mental new horror film Malignant.
The film is centered around protagonist Madison (Annabelle Wallis) being terrorised by her apparently imaginary childhood friend Gabriel, who has resurfaced as a supernatural serial killer.
Ultimately, it's revealed that Gabriel is actually Madison's twin brother, a tumour-like, malformed humanoid growth which shared Madison's brain and spinal cord when she was a child.
Doctors operated on Madison in her youth to remove the growth, though were unable to operate on her brain, leaving a vestigial part of Gabriel behind.
That remnant stayed dormant until Madison's abusive husband pushed her head against a wall near the start of the film, effectively waking Gabriel up.
Not only has Gabriel been using Madison's body to carry out the killings, but he even emerges out the back of Madison's skull in the barmy third act, appearing as a grotesque half-formed face.
This explains why Gabriel appears to walk with an unnatural gait whenever we see him - he's walking backwards because he's operating Madison's body from the back.
Say what you will about Wan's film, but it's impressive that he convinced Warner Bros. to throw down $40 million for something so utterly bats**t insane.
