Despite clearly making an attempt to shake up the Saw franchise with a more socially conscious bent, Spiral was ultimately a disappointingly lazy addition to the series' dense mythology.

The film's biggest WTF moment is also its primary problem - the neon-signposted obviousness of the big twist.

The third act reveals that the new Jigsaw copycat is none other than Zeke's (Chris Rock) partner Detective Schenk (Max Minghella), who was presumed to have been killed by Jigsaw earlier in the film.

Though Schenk's motive - to punish corrupt cops after one killed his father years earlier - was intriguing, anyone who's seen enough of these movies knew Schenk was the villain the second his "death" occurred off-screen.

Schenk is "killed" by Jigsaw and oh-so-conveniently skinned alive, which for fans who've sat through eight movies worth of cunning plot twists was all the tip-off they needed that Schenk was the antagonist.

For a series that surged in popularity on the strength of its insane plot twists, this was a weirdly pedestrian one that many fans even guessed as soon as the first trailer was released.
