The Film

Having made the excellent 21 Jump Street and the God-awful Project X, Michael Bacall was said to be working on a remake of John Hughes' seminal teen pervert film Weird Science. He's obviously taking his time, since it's taken years for it to get anywhere beyond scripting, and it's still there apparently.

Apparently, the remake would seek to distinguish itself from the original with more edge - in line with 21 Jump Street and The Hangover, which were both R-rated. As long as it's funny, who cares about the rating?

So, what's going on with it? It's hard to tell, frankly - after it was reported by Deadline in 2013, everything has gone a little quiet, but it hasn't been officially cancelled, at least.

Is It A Good Idea?

Given the advent of 3D printing and the continued existence of teenagers who want to have sex with things, it's a surprise this hasn't actually happened in real life. So it probably should be a movie - it's just less of a fantasy than it was in the 1980s, with the advancements in technology.

I'm not saying making an actual woman is possible currently, but it's less of a pie in the sky idea than it was back in 1985.
