20 Movie Remakes You Didn’t Know Were In The Works
8. The Warriors
The Film
Back in 2005, Tony Scott had been planning to remake The Warriors set in modern day New York City, but without including iconic gangs the Baseball Furies and Hi-Hats would not be included. After his tragic death, Crank co-director Mark Neveldine took over, but he has admitted to ScreenCrush that it's currently stuck in a rights quagmire.
He also revealed some more details of how he'd make it:
"We have never been interested in remakes, and probably still aren’t. But that’s the one that we’ve always felt would just be awesome. We just feel like we’re the perfect guys for that job; baseball bats, roller-skates, gangs, the heightened world... We would set it, obviously, five minutes in the future, and we’d really love to build these flamboyant gangs and have fun with them, and have a heightened sense of action and bring all the things that we’ve learned and stolen from Rodriguez and Tarantino and other great directors and put it on the screen."
Is It A Good Idea?
It's fundamentally a great, and timeless idea, and it would be particularly interesting to see a modern twist, given the current political climate (and the success of the Purge films), but it's a shame it would come at the cost of some of the original's lustre.
The question here really is just whether it would be watched. That answer is a definite yes.
