20 Movie Remakes You Didn’t Know Were In The Works
3. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
The Film
In 1988 Steve Martin offered one of his best performances in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (a remake itself of 1964's Bedtime Story) and now Hollywood is going to try and recapture the magic.
Inevitably, there will be some hilarious anger at the decision to gender-swap the roles, with Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway in place of Martin and Michael Caine - but that's a great cast, and bringing in The Thick Of It's Chris Addison to direct (as his debut) is surprisingly genius.
Rather unfortunately, it's been called Nasty Women.
Is It A Good Idea?
If it's different, it's fine, but any remake - male-led or female-led - would struggle to capture the same kind of chemistry that Martin and Caine managed in the original. And there are legitimately NO actors currently working who could ever mug like Martin did.
Still, as long as they don't turn it into an excuse to have Rebel Wilson falling over and making tasteless fat jokes - rather than showing off her actual comedy chops - it will probably still be good. Plus, Chris Addison has a great comedy brain.
It's just a shame about the new name.
