20 Movie Scenes That Are Totally Flawless
12. I'm Not Being Funny - In Bruges (2008)
A lot of the previous entries have been all about atmosphere, with minimal dialogue and a tight focus on tone and visual flare.
This wonderful scene from the dark comedy In Bruges, however, is all about dialogue, and finds writer/director Martin McDonagh trying his damnedest to make the confrontation between veteran hitman Ken (Brendan Gleeson) and his mob boss employer Harry (Ralph Fiennes) as intense and hilarious as possible.
Throughout the movie, Ken has been hiding out in Bruges with novice assassin Ray (Colin Farrell) after a hit-gone-wrong, whilst grappling with his latest assignment: Kill Ray for his failure.
In a last-act twist, Ken lets Ray go free and stays behind in town to confront his incredibly angry boss, and the two engage in an increasingly profane battle of wits where they lay everything out on the table and confront the complex situation at hand. It's dark, over-the-top and brutally funny, and the key highlight in a film with many.
