19. X-Men 2 (2003)
In the early 00s, there were several big superhero blockbusters released that would set the blueprint for both Marvel and DC's upcoming franchises. One of the best and most influential of these was X2, a sequel which improved upon its foundation so effectively it still remains the best mainline X-Men movie ever made.
With an impossibly packed cast, spectacular action sequences and powerful themes of oppression, the film follows the X-Men as they attempt to save mutantkind from the clutches of tyrannical military scientist William Stryker.
Crafted with impeccable set pieces and anchored by the work of its principal cast - especially an enraged but vulnerable Hugh Jackman - X-Men 2 is both urgent and timely, and has aged like fine wine thanks to its glorious action, unpredictable twists, and a superhero cliffhanger that wasn't really topped until Avengers: Infinity War.
