One of the most unexpected success stories of 2025 has been the global phenomenon that is KPop Demon Hunters, the animated musical fantasy becoming the most-watched original title in Netflix history, with many believing it could go on to win Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.

A new franchise has been born, then, and in November Netflix confirmed that a sequel was in development with co-writer and director Maggie Kang returning to pen the script for a 2029 release.

Netflix has made it clear upfront that they don't want to rush the sequel and instead give the creatives time to deliver a quality follow-up.

Sony, who sold the film to Netflix along with the wider franchise ownership amid the pandemic, must surely be kicking themselves for letting such a gargantuan IP go, even if it's absolutely fair to say that it likely wouldn't have blown up without the ubiquity of a Netflix streaming release.
