20 Movie Sequels That Were JUST Confirmed
The confirmed movie sequels heading to screens in 2026 and beyond.
Even with the movie industry in flux with takeovers, AI concerns and studio ructions aplenty, there's one thing you can always bet on: new sequels. After all, why bother investing in talented rising filmmakers with original ideas when you can just roll the dice on the safety of tried-and-tested franchise fare, right?
Even with that in mind, though, sometimes sequels take their sweet time coming together for one of many reasons - perhaps the cast and crew can't figure out their schedules, the previous film underperformed, or ever-pesky "creative differences."
But these 20 movie sequels were all finally recently confirmed, many of them long-awaited follow-ups that fans have been waiting years, perhaps even decades to see, while others are less-anticipated but still offer plenty of promise.
Though these sequels are all in various stages of production, from wrapped to current filming to still in early development, each absolutely appears to be hitting screens in the near future.
Much as we might decry the lack of non-IP filmmaking in Hollywood, let's be real - most of us are going to be lining up for a good number of the sequels on this list...
20. The Mummy 4
With the career resurgence of Brendan Fraser in recent years, there's been continued fan outcry for a fourth entry into his beloved The Mummy franchise, but for a while it seemed like little more than wishful thinking from a vocal minority.
After all, despite Fraser's recent Oscar win and popularity in online circles, his last blockbuster hit was The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor way back in 2008 - a sequel so reviled by critics and fans alike that a follow-up was never produced.
But in November, it was announced that Fraser and Rachel Weisz were both in talks to return for a new Mummy film set to be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not, Scream 2022).
Though little else of substance is known yet, it's been said that the new Mummy will act as a direct sequel to The Mummy Returns and ignore the events of Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, where Weisz opted not to return and was replaced as Evelyn Carnahan by Maria Bello.
