2018's "screencast" movie Searching was a huge critical and commercial hit, grossing $75.5 million against a mere $800,000 budget. Despite this, the focal mystery seemed like a total one-off event, such that many initially doubted whether a sequel would come to fruition.
However, in August 2019 a standalone sequel was confirmed, with original director-writer team Aneesh Chaganty and Sev Ohanian devising a treatment which was turned into a script by Searching's editing duo, Will Merrick and Nick Johnson, who will also direct the new film. Actress Storm Reid was also in talks to play a major role.
Shooting began at the end of March and is scheduled to wrap at the end of May, so there's absolutely no chance Searching 2, or whatever it ends up being called, isn't out by the end of 2022.
