20 Movies Every Nerd Must See Before They Die

3. Evil Dead II (1987)

A rare sequel that improves upon the original, Sam Raimi's second Evil Dead movie may not be the most ambitious step-up from what came before, but it's a better film in every regard: Bruce Campbell is crazier, the gore is more voluminous, the effects are effortlessly superior, and the comedy feels much more intentional this time. It's hard to lock down one true highlight, though the combination of Campbell's go-for-broke performance and a substantially higher budget than the original movie allow Raimi to deliver arguably the best film of his career, a ludicrous splatter-fest that doesn't care for taste one bit, and is all the more enjoyable as a result. Just try and see the movie without saying "Groovy" afterwards, we dare you.
