20 Movies Since 2010 So Awful They're Actually Harrowing

16. Mortdecai

Nicolas Cage Trespass
Lionsgate

There’s only one word to summarize this properly: cringe-worthy. And not good cringe-worthy like Ricky Gervais’ The Office, just cringe-inducing in a sad, pitiful way. Johnny Depp was terrific in the first Pirates of the Caribbean, but he’s been playing a hyper, cartoonish and insufferable Jack Sparrow-like character covered in layers of face paint for over a decade now.

Here he plays an annoying art thief trying to recover a stolen painting, and this could be his worst performance to date. Meanwhile, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor both humiliate themselves - although Paul Bettany is quite amusing as Mortdecai’s manservant.

Both dull and unfunny, Mortdecai is relentlessly, hopelessly irritating from start to finish. It’s not a film you hate; it’s a film you pity and feel sorry for. Therefore, watching Mortdecai becomes a strangely depressing experience. Out of all the terrible Johnny Depp vehicles in recent times, this one definitely stands out as the most dire and insufferable.
