20 Movies So Good You Ignore Huge Plot Holes
1. The Shawshank Redemption - Andy's Escape Is Low-Key Ridiculous
While it bombed on its original release, The Shawshank Redemption now enjoys the reputation it's always deserved. It's one of the most affecting, inspirational, and beautiful movies ever crafted. Still, one more time: no movie is perfect.
If there's one glaring flaw in Shawshank, it's that Andy's (Tim Robbins) escape from prison, as euphoric and uplifting as it is, doesn't actually make complete sense. And no, the entire thing about Andy reattaching the poster to the wall from the inside isn't a plot hole, because he only attached it from above, meaning it just flapped down after him as he escaped. There are other issues, though.
Someone would've noticed that Andy was now wearing the shoes of Warden Norton (Bob Gunton) as he returned to his cell, and it seems a bit far-fetched that no-one discovered the tunnel Andy was digging over the best part of 20 years. Also, he'd need more than a rock to break that sewage pipe open.
Regardless, Andy's escape from Shawshank Prison is such a moving tribute to hope and perseverance that it'll leave most viewers glowing inside and wiping away joyful tears. It's a reminder that a few plot holes here and there are worth it to create movie moments this perfect, and hey, we go to the movies to escape reality anyhow.
