9. Darkest Hour – Gary Oldman

Hot on the heels of the critically panned Pan (see what I did there?), British director Joe Wright returns with his new wartime drama Darkest Hour in 2017.

As its title might suggest, the film focuses on legendary British prime minister Winston Churchill during the early days of World War II when he is forced to make the decision between making humiliating peace negotiations with Nazi Germany or continuing to fight against them in the name of liberty.

Spoiler: he chose the latter. Gary Oldman will take on the role of the portly politician while Kristen Scott Thomas will play Churchill’s wife Clementine and John Hurt will star as the PM’s predecessor Neville Chamberlain.

Now, Oldman is a very versatile actor and has portrayed characters as diverse as Sirius Black, Sid Vicious and, rather regrettably, a dwarf in the terrible rom-com Tiptoes but it’s still hard to imagine him taking on the physicality of Churchill convincingly. However, the first photos of Oldman in full Churchill garb complete with receding hairline, cigar and double chin prove that the actor and make up department have nailed the look to a T.
