20 Movies That Prove 2022 Is The Best Year For Horror EVER

13. Smile

No single horror movie has surprised as many genre fans this year as Smile. Though the marketing presented it as an aggressively lousy riff on Truth or Dare, it's actually a far more thoughtful and well-crafted film that the trailers gave it credit for.

While fundamentally indebted to films such as It Follows and The Ring, it also forges its own distinct identity courtesy of its deep-dish examination of personal trauma, brought to life by a phenomenal central performance from Sosie Bacon.

Even with a beefy 115-minute runtime, Smile's continuous doling out of disturbing revelations and consistently oppressive mood ensure it sustains momentum all the way to the finish line.

With Smile having grossed an astonishing $185 million worldwide to date - that's more than Scream, incredibly - it's just a matter of time before Smile 2 (Smile Too?) is announced.
