20 Movies That Took HUGE Risks (And NAILED It)

17. The Genre Shift - Parasite

Bong Joon Ho's Parasite was marketed as a clever capitalist satire, and for its first act that certainly appears to be the vibe, yet mid-way through the film there's a major tonal shift where it segues into an outright thriller.

And again the genre shifts in the third act into more outright heightened horror territory as all hell breaks loose.

It would've been incredibly easy for a less-disciplined filmmaker to lose their grasp of the tonal throughline and deliver an unwieldy mess, but Bong handles the transition between moods expertly, aided by a cast that's clearly on the same page.

And, honestly, what says "nailing it" more than winning the Best Picture Oscar - and better yet, being the first non-English language film to do it?

It's easy to picture another filmmaker making a total pig's ear of Bong's script, but he makes the switch from one genre to another feel completely natural, daring though it undeniably is.
