16. The First Purge

Somehow, the Purge franchise has morphed into one of the best horror properties of the decade. Shifting from the claustrophobic home-invasion thriller of the original to the anarchic action-orientated sequels, the series' premise inherently breeds creativity, with each new film expanding upon the horrors that could realistically occur if anything was legal for 12 hours.

However, it's the latest prequel, The First Purge, which is finally going to dive into one of the most interesting parts of that premise. Focusing on, obviously, the very first purge, the film is set to investigate the creators of the law, the New Founding Fathers of America, and how it was actually their influence that made the the annual night such a bloodthirsty event.

Although some fans may not like how politicised the film is bound to be, each one of its predecessors has always been politically-charged in different ways (after all, it's hard to have a movie about elites snuffing out social undesirables without getting into real-world issues), it's just this time those messages and themes are going to be more overt than ever.
