20 Movies That Will Win Oscars In 2023
6. The Banshees Of Inisherin
The Banshees of Inisherin is the new black comedy-drama from the great Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), and since its Venice premiere, it's enjoyed widespread acclaim for basically every aspect of its production.
Nominations for Best Picture, Director, Actor (Colin Farrell), Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson), Original Screenplay, and Film Editing are all very strong possibilities, and given that Colin Farrell won Venice's Best Actor award, the Volpi Cup, he's especially a major threat in his field (despite the Volpi Cup rarely translating to an actual Best Actor Oscar).
With so many of its more Oscar-baiting competition already underperforming in reviews or flaming out of the awards race entirely, McDonagh's more low-key drama has become a genuine contender and should walk away with at least one gong.
Given the general industry love for Brendan Gleeson, who has bafflingly never been nominated for an Oscar before, the "overdue" narrative would certainly fit him like a glove.
