Top Gun: Maverick has been 2022's big surprise success story, having scored strong critical acclaim and grossed over $1.45 billion to date, making it by far the highest-grossing film of the year.

Given that numerous high-profile "prestige films" have under-performed at both Venice and TIFF, there's been increasing speculation that Maverick could land nominations in above-the-line categories like Best Picture, even if its chances of winning are slim-to-none.

Where it will almost certainly pick up gold, though, is for Best Film Editing and Best Sound, given the film's impeccable technical craft and how expertly the editing and sound design helped ensure Maverick was a film you absolutely needed to see on the big screen.
