15. The Mitchells Vs. The Machines
Releasing mere days after this year's Oscar ceremony took place, The Mitchells vs. The Machines is the latest animated adventure produced by the wonder-team Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie).
The film revolves around a family whose road trip becomes a fight for survival as they try to prevent a robot uprising from destroying Earth.
It may sound conventional enough, but early reviews have roundly raved about the film, which is currently touting a similar reception to this year's Best Animated Feature Film Oscar winner, Soul.
The year is young of course, and it will face stiff competition from Pixar's Luca and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio in particular, but The Mitchells vs. The Machines has planted its flag early as the animated film to beat.
With its broad premise and Netflix release, it certainly won't have the same problems with accessibility which prevented Wolfwalkers from prevailing over Soul this year.
