Forget the backlash, forget all the controversy. Let's just focus on The Last Jedi as a film, as well as the huge number of things it gets right.

The spectacle is exhilarating, the performances are fantastic, there's some genuinely great emotional drama, there's more suspense here than in any other Star Wars movie... it's a really, really strong (if slightly messy) science-fiction sequel and one of the best blockbusters of the last thirty years.

It's also got the best ever Star Wars performance from Adam Driver and some of the most stunning scenes in the franchise's history, making it the best film in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and the franchise's best film since The Empire Strikes Back.

Haters can hate all they want, each to their own. That being said, this is a spectacular, brave and frequently beautiful space opera and those who didn't like it before should definitely give it another chance. They might just be pleasantly surprised.

After all, The Empire Strikes Back was very divisive back when it was released and look at how well-loved it is now.
