Rogue One is one of the smartest and most interesting blockbuster films of recent times. It takes a well-loved and iconic cinematic universe and explores it in a way that's never been done before. It's basically a gritty war film set within the Star Wars galaxy and it's fascinating to watch.

There are actually a fair few things it gets wrong; the characterisation is hit-or-miss and those CGI resurrections were a major lapse in judgement, but because the film is mostly so strong those flaws are immediately forgiven.

It's a haunting, bittersweet experience that's dark as hell and not exactly fun, but it's still a very satisfying viewing and it's wonderful to see a Hollywood film that not only went in the darkest direction possible, but which also took so many risks and focused so much on being thought-provoking.

Yes, Solo: A Star Wars Story was godawful, but Disney should definitely try to do a few more of these spin-offs nonetheless. In general, Hollywood should make more movies like Rogue One.
