13. All Quiet On The Western Front
Easy though it is to scoff at the idea of a new adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel All Quiet on the Western Front, almost an entire century has passed since Lewis Milestone's Best Picture-winning adaptation.
More to the point, this new take from director Edward Berger (Patrick Melrose) seems to be eschewing a glossier, more star-studded treatment in favour of a sober and grounded treatment of the classic anti-war World War I tale.
While the teenage trio thrust into the fog of war will be played by rising youngsters Felix Krammerer, Aaron Hilmer, and Moritz Klaus, the great Daniel Brühl will co-star as writer and politician Matthias Erzberger.
Though it likely won't match the original's industry success, it certainly has everything it needs to deliver a quality new vision of Remarque's beloved source novel.
All Quiet on the Western Front releases later this year.
