20 Opening Movie Scenes That Are Totally Flawless

7. What's Your Plan? - Parasite (2019)

Sweeping the Oscars to become the first foreign-language Best Picture winner, Boon Joon-ho's Parasite paints a striking and harrowing picture of class inequality and poverty which is both darkly hilarious, frustratingly relevant and brilliantly unique.

All of this becomes clear in the very first scene, which follows the poor Kim family as they attempt to contend with their worsening living conditions. In their cramped basement apartment, they lose their wi-fi, struggle with their pizza box folding job, and are infested with stink bugs. The apartment is also fumigated whilst they're still inside.

It's both achingly funny and horribly tragic, and perfectly demonstrates just how genre-bending, confrontational and urgent the rest of the film will be.

A film that deserves to be ranked alongside the all-time greats, Parasite is a remarkable achievement in moviemaking and storytelling, and its opening scene makes things clear that it's a film unlike any other you've seen before.
