Richard Linklater is a master when it comes to setting up the premise and feel of a movie within only a few short moments. His films are known for their naturalistic progression and instantly relatable characters, and Before Sunrise is a perfect example of just how marvellous a filmmaker he is.

The first in Linklater's ingenious Before Trilogy, Before Sunrise opens on a train headed for Vienna, and initially focusses on a bickering German couple whose squabble causes Celine (Julie Delpy) to move seats and closer to Jesse (Ethan Hawke).

Though timid and quiet at first, the two strangers eventually start talking about the German couple, the idea of growing old married, and the books they're reading. Jesse then asks Celine if she wants to come to the lounge car with him, so they can keep talking.

It's such a wistful and simple opening that it makes you instantly fall in love with the characters and become enthralled by their relationship. Turning away from their journey is impossible from here-on-out.
