20 People You Won't Believe Have Never Won An Oscar
1. Peter O Toole
Who else would be Number 1? Peter O'Toole, like Glenn Close, is an unfortunate record breaker. He is the recipient of 8 Academy Award nominations but has never once walked away with the grand prize. Even his timeless portrayal of T.E Lawrence in the 1962 classic, Lawrence of Arabia, which is widely regarded as the best performance of all time, was not considered Oscar worthy by the Academy? O Toole's other nominations include Becket, Goodbye Mr.Chips, The Lion In Winter and most recently Venus, but none of these performances have prevailed as the outright winner. He has amassed four Golden Globe wins throughout his illustrious career and has actually received an honorary Academy Award in 2003 (which he almost turned down), however it's amazing to think that such a legend of cinema, probably the greatest British thespian of all time, will most likely retire from film completely Oscar-less. O'Toole has stated that he very nearly turned down the honorary Award because he was not content with being awarded a consolation prize (he wanted the real deal). This is a fair enough attitude from an Actor who has committed almost 50 years of his life to making movies and has witnessed much lesser actors than himself walk away with the grand prize. Having said this, O Toole appears to be stoic to his misfortunes. He has managed to locate the lighter side of his hardship, joking that he is "always the bridesmaid, never the bride".
