Villeneuve's movies aren't for all tastes, that's for sure: some critics found Enemy too obtuse and Prisoners relentlessly grim, but there's little arguing with his meticulous style, penchant for bringing out the best in actors, and ability to cleverly rework potentially familiar material.

With a conservative $50 million budget for such a high-concept premise, hopefully Arrival will remain relatively grounded and focus more on characters rather than explosive incident. It's Villeneuve's wheelhouse and tough to imagine him screwing it up.
