10. The Killer
John Woo's legendary 1989 action thriller The Killer is such a perfectly formed slice of heroic bloodshed that it seemed foolish for anyone to consider remaking it. So what a surprise it was when Woo decided to just remake it himself last year.
The "But why?" of it was strong, especially considering that the quality of Woo's recent output has been shaky, to be polite, and so this felt like little more than a desperate attempt to wring some more money out of a certified banger.
This English-language remake shifts the setting to Paris and gender-swaps its protagonist, yet despite game performances from Nathalie Emmanuel and Omar Sy it lacks the energy and verve of its predecessor.
The action just can't hold a candle to what came before, and all in all it feels like an anonymous straight-to-streaming action flick designed to be forgotten in short order - which is pretty much precisely what happened.
