9. Witchboard
Remakes are more abundant in horror than just about any other genre, but few were likely expecting a new take on the 1986 cult horror film Witchboard.
The original film, revolving around a Ouija board which possesses a college student, was a modest box office success and still has its fans to this very day, even if few likely considered it ripe for the remake treatment given the many Ouija-centric horrors which have been released over the past decade-or-so.
And this wasn't exactly a major Blumhouse remake or anything - it was independently produced for $15 million and then quietly released this past summer.
Now, the new Witchboard from director Chuck Russell (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Mask) is absolutely watchable, but just doesn't do a whole lot to justify its existence as a remake.
It doesn't do anything interesting with the original concept and for some reason it's dangerously close to two hours long.
The interest evidently just wasn't there, as it barely grossed $500k at the box office and swiftly slid into the streaming content void.
