The new psychological thriller Locked stars Bill Skarsgård as a petty thief who breaks into a fancy smart SUV, only to end up locked inside by the owner (Anthony Hopkins), who then remotely torments him from afar.
A solid 90% of people who've seen Locked probably aren't even aware that it's remake, but in actual fact it's based on a 2019 Argentine film, 4x4.
And while it's common for Hollywood to remake hugely successful international hits, less often do we see them picking up little-known genre films and offering their own spin.
The sheer low profile of 4x4 meant that nobody was asking for it to be remade, and so the filmmakers behind Locked were basically able to avoid the usual "remake bad" discourse.
It certainly helps that the original is itself just a fairly OK film, and this remake is at least consistent, itself being similarly passable.
