7. Speak No Evil
The moment that 2022's Dutch-Danish horror-thriller Speak No Evil became a hit on streaming service Shudder, it seemed inevitable that it'd get scooped up for an English language remake.
And mere months later the remake was indeed announced, with James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, and Scoot McNairy set to star, while James Watkins (Eden Lake) directs.
Even accepting the plaudits of everyone involved, for many it was tough to ignore the inherent cynicism of the project, to retell the same story just two years later for an audience which won't engage with "foreign" content.
And while the Speak No Evil remake was relatively decent as they go - largely due to McAvoy's go-for-broke performance - it unfortunately did the most predictably Hollywood thing imaginable by ditching the original's almost unbearably bleak ending for something more triumphant and crowd-pleasing.
Universal probably doesn't consider the remake pointless given its box office success, but the original is just a more interesting and visceral piece in basically every way.
